How does Who-was-that.net find out who the unknown caller is?
We check a variety of sources to find out as much as we can about the caller. Across multiple sources we will establish carrier details, location, device type, whether the number is connected to social accounts and whether the number is tied to a specific individual in various online databases. This gives you the best chance of finding out who called you.
Why would I check unknown phone numbers?
In February 2026, 37% of UK phone users indicated to have received a suspicious phone call in the last three months, according to Ofcom. Scammers call continuously in order to steal sensitive information, manipulate people into transferring them money, share 2FA codes or passwords, or just to verify that a phone number is active for a later scam. What is important to realise is that scammers do this day in, day out. Meaning that they can often become quite sophisticated and believable. It is therefore very important to stay vigilant. Checking unknown phone numbers before you call them back is just one simple tool that can help in keeping you safe.

Frequently asked questions
How can I find out who called me from this number?
In this report, Ofcom estimated that UK households receive 5 billion nuisance calls per year. Therefore, you save yourself quite some headache by checking unknown phone numbers with Who-Was-That.net. By using our tool, we will quickly assess who the caller is and whether it is worth it to call the unknown caller back.
Is this phone number checker free?
Yes, the tool is completely free to use.
How do I check if a number is a scam?
You can never know for sure, but our tool provides extra context for you to make an informed decision. In general, however, we advise people not to call back unknown numbers.
What do 0333, 0330 and 0800 numbers mean?
They’re UK non-geographic numbers, so they show the type of caller rather than a location. 0330 and 0333 numbers are used mostly by businesses and customer service teams, and cost the same to call as a standard 01 or 02 number. 0800 numbers are freephone and free to call from UK landlines and mobiles. Most of these calls are genuine, but scammers can spoof any number. If an unexpected caller asks for personal or payment details, hang up and call the company back on its official number, or look the number up in our checker first.
How do I block spam calls?
Block a single number from your call history (tap ⓘ on iPhone, or tap and hold on Android). For wider protection, turn on Silence Unknown Callers on iPhone or Google’s caller ID and spam filter on Android. Registering with the free Telephone Preference Service stops legitimate UK sales calls, and Ofcom’s nuisance-call guide covers more ways to cut unwanted calls. Not sure about a missed call? Check the number in our tool before you call back.
Why am I getting so many spam calls?
Your number may be exposed in a variety of different ways. Professional lead generation software checks many places on the internet to tie together people’s information and phone numbers, which are then called by telemarketers when that information matches their target profile. Furthermore, your number may also have been exposed in a leak. To verify the latter, you can use our tool with your own phone number and we can verify whether your number was ever leaked.
What is caller ID spoofing, and how can I tell if a call is spoofed?
Caller ID spoofing is when a caller fakes the number on your screen. Scammers use it to pose as your bank, the police or a local business, or to show a random UK mobile number you’re more likely to answer. Ofcom requires UK networks to block many spoofed calls from abroad, but some still get through.
You usually can’t tell from the number alone. The warning signs are in the call itself: pressure to act now, requests for PINs, passwords or one-time codes, or being told to move money to a “safe account.” If a call claims to be from your bank, hang up and call 159 to reach your bank safely, or ring the number on the back of your card. You can report scam calls to Report Fraud, the service that replaced Action Fraud. Checking the number in our tool shows what others have reported, but a clean result doesn’t prove a call is genuine, because the real owner’s number may have been borrowed.
